On Saturday January the 9th 2016, at the second round of the UK Monster Energy Arenacross Tour in Glasgow, Scotland, 31-year-old Daniel McCoy #65 was injured when he crashed over the handlebars of his bike which then flipped back on him. He was quickly treated by medics and then transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with T11/T12 dislocation and compression fracture causing pressure on the spinal column and paralysis from the waist down.
He underwent surgery on the 13th of January to relieve the pressure in his spine so that he could fly home to Australia and he has now started an intensive programme of rehabilitation at The Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, Australia medical unit.
Riding for the MVR-D Husqvarna team, Daniel was a hugely popular competitor in the UK Arenacross scene and the sport and industry reacted quickly in supporting Daniel and his family. Team boss Mark Chamberlain said: “It is always really deeply upsetting when one of your riders gets injured and Daniel has a long road ahead of him. We’re all thinking positively for him and doing everything we can to help raise funds and support him and his family. Both Dan and his girlfriend Amy have been overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity.
